The Banana Man is Coming, The Banana Man is Coming!
Coming to college campus near you (and in my case outside the front door of my place of work): Banana Man!
Yes, that shining example of open-mindedness and outright intelligence, Ray Comort, and his Hollywood minion, Kirk Cameron, will be visiting and sending minions to visit, college campuses all over the country to further “educate” our college students.
Apparently there is a “new” version of Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species. Who knew Chuck would come back from the dead to write a new version, complete with an introduction by the genius Ray Comfort. And Ray has seen fit to make sure that our college students get a free copy of this wonderfully reworked version of the Origin.
Now, I must be clear, this is an abridged version (edited by Comfort himself) and the introduction really has nothing to do with science, evolution, or reality. It has much to do with creationism and lies spouted by Comfort to try to sway students away from the science of evolution and toward the BS known as “intelligent design.” He goes so far as to argue that Darwin and his “theory” were to blame for such things as the rise of Hitler and the Holocaust. Neither of which had anything to do with Darwin or the Origin of Species.
Typical low ball tactics from the ignorant duo of Comfort and Cameron.
This week Comfort, Cameron, and their minions will be visiting Emory University. On November 19th they will be handing out free copies of the bastardized Origin around the Dobbs University Center on Emory’s campus (like I said, right outside my place of work which is in the DUC) so if you happen to be around or want to make a special trip to thwart these fools, here is some information and a response (after the fold):
Go the this site (http://ncse.com/dont-diss-darwin), where you can print off “banana” book marks. Below is information regarding the response at Emory:
this is to organize a response to Ray Comfort’s action to hand out free copies of the Origin of Species with a creationist introduction on 19 Nov at the Emory campus (see info below and
http://ncse.com/dont-diss-darwin). For those interested, we are meeting on at 10am on Tuesday 17 Nov (Wayne Rollins Research Center room 1052) to organise a response on 19 Nov. Our plan is to hand out flyers, pro-evolution t-shirts (provided by the National Center for Science Education) and evolution book marks on 19 Nov, and to
individually collect copies of this Origin of Species to avoid their being given to unknowing students. What we need is volunteers to:1. help with preparing flyers on 17-18 Nov;
2. help with distributing flyers/bookmarks/t-shirts and collecting books on 19 Nov.Our aim is to have at least several people actively distributing these materials on the main quad and around the DUC throughout the day on 19 Nov, and if we have enough volunteers, we may all only need to spend an hour or so doing this. Hence, please forward this email to anyone you think may want to help, including graduate and undergraduate classes. Our meeting on 17 Nov is to get people organized and prepare a schedule for 19 Nov.
